To mark the proud moment of winning Zee 24 Ghanta "EDUCATION EXCELLENCE AWARD 2020" by Dr. B.C. Roy Engineering College and Group of Institutions, an interview of half an hour will be telecast of our Hon'ble General Secretary Mr. Tarun Bhattacharya and the Director Dr. Pijush Pal Roy, BCREC on 26th September, 2020 at 5.30 PM by Zee 24 Ghanta.
Engineers’ Day Message of the Director, BCREC
Every year India celebrates Engineer's Day on September 15, the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. He went on to become India's most prolific civil engineer, dam builder, economist and statesman. ... Visvesvaraya is credited with inventing the block system, automated doors that close the water overflows.
On this auspicious day, let me share some of my thoughts and ideas to the practicing engineers and aspiring students’ community. Today’s engineering is multidisciplinary and knowledge-intensive global economy, which is becoming more and more dependent on various knowledge-based activities in the so-called ‘Knowledge Era’ that we are passing through now. Knowledge is the key resource of this era, which should be utilised strategically to yield economic benefits. As expected, the primary focus is on the generation of new knowledge and nurturing existing knowledge with value appropriate addition. Global competitiveness is now driving new advancement and new technologies are concomitantly changing the role of engineering in the society by moving away from the traditional engineering disciplines to more interdisciplinary interactions.
The engineering profession is facing some major challenges in this Knowledge Era. Modern machines are reaching new levels of complexity that increasingly require interdisciplinary collaborations. For manufacturing complex systems, engineers must have adequate knowledge in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. In our present system, disciplinary boundaries go against the interdisciplinary nature of complex machines. Manufacturing of an intelligent robot, newer aircrafts or automobiles requires competency in mechanical as well as electrical and electronics engineering. Thus Mechatronics and Robotics have evolved as prospective engineering disciplines.
Mother Nature is the best designer. Scientists and technologists have always been inspired by designs and systems which emerge from nature and which have immense potential for replication in all branches of engineering and science. Biomimetics, an emerging area in recent research scenario, is the impressions of the natural processes for solving complex engineering problems related to actuation, gait, locomotion, propulsion, etc. Swimming action of fish inspire scientists to explore biomimetic fin actuation which can be used in autonomous underwater vehicles. Inspired by the musculo-skeletal actuation of live organisms, engineers can introduce considerable flexibility at the actuated joints for design of soft and human friendly robots. The principles of aerodynamics can be well understood by observing the flying mechanism of birds. Inspired by nature and aided by specific domain knowledge of chemistry, biology, engineering and allied disciplines, biomimetics has enormous potential for stimulating exciting future technologies.
Miniature form of machine poses yet another challenge for engineers. The advanced and futuristic machines need to be intelligent, autonomous and must accommodate sensors within a small space and so that less energy is consumed and less material is used. A Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC) device which can integrate within a miniaturized environment diverse laboratory functions has tremendous potential to be used in healthcare system as point-of-care testing devices. The Lab-on-a-Chip devices also have a great potential for addressing environmental needs.
In today’s world, computer aided design and engineering has become the backbone of any new product development exercise which requires elaborate and complex design. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has also emerged as one of the core strengths in engineering with the advancement of supercomputing capability.
Renewed apprehensions about increasing energy cost, energy dependence and environmental damage is expected to dramatically shift the future mode of transportation in favour of electric vehicles. Emerging global concerns about reducing vehicle emission and more stringent air pollution regulations are further expected to tilt the balance in favour of electric vehicles, and the future market size of electric vehicles worldwide would be enormous. Development of appropriate power electronic technologies related to vehicle propulsion, battery charging and power accessories need to be explored and suitable solutions developed to allow the market for electric vehicles to grow at an accelerated pace and fulfil the emerging market needs.
Today’s engineering approaches should be an optimised effort towards the betterment of human society as well as natural disasters and national security. Working on multidisciplinary research demands in-depth knowledge on the related fundamental subjects.
There is absolutely no doubt that with the huge knowledgeable workforce, scientific temperament, research facilities and intelligence, India will prove to be one of the leading countries in Engineering applications; and that will actually fulfil the deem of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.
Dr. B C Roy Engineering College and Group of Institutions, Durgapur win Zee 24 Ghanta Education Excellence Award, 2020, for second time.
At a programme held on 22nd August, 2020 at its Salt Lake, Sector - 5 premises, Mr. Anirban Choudhury, Editor and Channel Head, Zee 24 Ghanta, handed over the Education Excellence Award, 2020, Winner's Trophy and the citation to Dr. Sourav Dutta, Principal, Dr. B C Roy Engineering College, Academy of Professional Courses and to Dr. Arindam Chakraborty, Principal, Dr. B C Roy College of Polytechnic, respectively. While thanking Zee 24 Ghanta and the Editor, Principal Sourav Dutta, appreciated the untiring efforts of entire Dr. B C Roy collective and also its top management for whom the institution is now on fast track. Dr. B C Roy Engineering College and Group of Institutions, Durgapur, received this prestigious Education Excellence Award in 2019 for the first time.
Principal Arindam Chakraborty said, receipt of both NBA and NIRF accreditations, this year by our Pharmacy College is simply outstanding.
In same evening, Mr. Tarun Bhattacharya, General Secretary, Dr B C Roy Engineering College and Group of Institutions, Durgapur, participated in a virtual programme on education in Corona Environment, organized by the TV Channel along with a few other eminent educationists. Earlier, Dr. Partha Chatterjee, Hon'ble Higher Education Minister, West Bengal, also took part in the process in an elaborate way.
Already well known in academic circles for its stress on dynamic transformation of students and making them industry ready, BCREC Group did a wonderful job this year despite Corona pandemic to organize Placements in huge numbers and in the process a total of 443 students have been successful so far, in getting employment in different sectors of industries. Organizing a truly huge number of online classes in all the units of this institution is an extraordinary achievement by any standard.
